Gardataur
One of the best techno compilations ever. Back during this time, this music was proceeding at a dizzying pace - the "hot" style during one six month period would almost completely mutate and change during the next six month period. And as it happens, some of these six month periods were these beautiful, ephemeral moments in time that cannot be duplicated. The music on this disc represents one of these moments in time. Back when "hardcore" was maybe a little over 130 BPM, and there was a thin line between Detroit techno and nearly everything else. The first track, "Eternal #2" combines a breakbeat with a simple techno riff and Rakim and Run D.M.C. samples - this would still move a crowd today. "Program 2" combines a Spock sample ("more energy") with some classic sounding techno production. I think my personal favorite track might be Voodoo Child (Moby) which is a very nice old-school ravey sort of anthem . "Gazza" by Andromeda is the only track I'll pass on - a rip-off of T99's "Anesthesia", and not a good one at that. Speedy J's "Evolution" is of course a slice of vintage Plus 8 techno; the Nexus 21 track is bleepy, nearly IDM-ish number. What can I say, if I only had one old-school "rave" compilation on a deserted island this would be the one. The tracks are almost all great, and it perfectly captures the essence of this era, when "anything goes". And I'd take any of these tracks over the slew of generic looped tribal beats any day.
