Much brighter and less wedded to electro than some of his earlier releases, NEO OUIJA shows Lee Norris’ Metamatics project finding its voice. The opening title track adds a drum ‘n’ bass rhythm to accompany the majestic, sweeping synths. “Beautiful Mutations” skitters along like an interstellar crab dancing to a springtime flute. The deceptively simple “Piano” breaks apart and reconstructs music into its component parts: tones, notes, and the sounds in between. But in case you’re feeling nostalgic, “Vanishing Point” brings back the angular harmonies that marked his earlier albums, paired with a slanted sense of melody. “So Many Ways” mixes shrill longing with a synth that sounds like question marks. The final track, “Evening Star” fades out on an ambient note, echoing tones into infinity.
