El May is actually Laura Meyerratken [also known as SvetLara Meyerratken], but that’s a ‘guitar tuning’ story you won’t want to miss] when you see her live.Laura plays with a few of her dear friends here on this EP, but for the most part, and in concert, she is usually by herself, creating simple acoustic washes, multiple harmonies, and percussion ... all through the use of a ‘Stamp On/Off’ foot controlled recording device. Laura moves with a dreamy folk music of sorts ... picture a contemporary Sandy Denny a la Fairport Convention, with all of today’s digital accompaniments, and you might just have a small glimpse of who El May actually is.This short body of work is an in process piece, and hopefully, much will be incorporated into the album she is working on, which she likes to refer to as a female counterpart to The Chinese Democracy. From speaking with her, I take that to mean we won’t be seeing the album anytime soon, so these four tracks will just have to hold us over. Laura has worked closely with the likes of Luna, where she played keyboards, Ben Lee, Luscious Jackson, Crooked Fingers, Dean & Britta and Nada Surf; creating atmospheric background, playing keyboards, drums, guitars, and vocals ... so you can see the woman has been around, and has been a highly prized member of any band she's been in.I think you will find this to be one of the brightest spots of your evening.*** Comes in a Cardboard Sleeve.Review by Jenell Kesler
