Italian one man band Piero Paolinelli dons his Sofa Talk alias for this far out collection of modern boogie, cosmic disco and relaxed house on Ambassadors Reception. Drawing inspiration from the Fender rhodes of Herbie Hancock, post-disco of Arthur Russell and the avant garde jazz of Sun RA, Sofatalk explores various music styles, from 80's underground New York to the first Chicago and Detroit house music. After a stargazing introduction, "Away From The Point" settles into its intergalactic strut with squelchy bass sounds, echo drenched lead synths and all manner of space jazz. Piero ups the tempo nicely for "Floating Thoughts" a body moving dancefloor cut which pairs proto house percussion and bass with italo sequences and bloodless deep house pads, somehow referencing 30 years of club history in one killer cut. Closing the A-side in mainroom fashion, Bolton's own Chris Massey takes the controls for his "Tops-Off" rework of "Floating Throughts", injecting a little acid-adrenaline into the cut via a croaking 303 bassline, chunky synths and general heads down brilliance. "Halo Strings" opens the flip with another blast of zero gravity boogie before Golf Channel's might Central Executives punch some distant co-ordinates into their mainframe and create a swirling psychedelic house version complete with Brazilian drums, hungry robot ants and the occasional blast of free jazz. All that remains is for Sofa Talk to beam us round the far side of the moon with another spaced out house cut, and we'll struggle to find our way back to terra firma - great stuff.
