The prolific Tritonal have certainly carried out from where they left off in 2008, releasing a stream of tracks this year. ‘Crash Into Reason’ is one of my personal highlights from 2009 and sees them joining forces with regular partner-in-crime Cristina Soto once again. The Original Vocal and Dub cuts could almost be described as progressive trancers with an uplifting, energetic edge (or vice versa), and the real beauty in these mixes is in the breakdown. Epic, sweeping and in the classic Balearic style, its achingly beautiful, heavily distorted guitar melody and warm synths work well alongside Soto’s wistful vocal (in the case of the former mix). From here on in the track dives into progressive mode, carried along on a bedrock of moody, bristling grooves and shadowy, pulsing synths and interspersed by signature vocal cut-ups, before building towards a trancier conclusion. The remixes work well too; Moonbeam’s rework deploys rumbling subterranean basslines to good effect, whilst DJ Eco’s remix is another heavy-duty groover with a dark demeanour. Highly recommended.
