COMPOSITION FOR PETS, the first (and so far, only) release by CK, artfully blends electro textures with chilly Scandinavian rhythms. “The World is Yours” sounds like a dark Drexciya track by way of Denmark, while “Be My Pet Tonight” is much peppier and upbeat. While the tracks may seem relatively simple, their unconventional use of melody keeps the listener interested and, for the most part, alert. “Wet Bunny” has an angular synth line to it, with some pornographic breathing near the end to cement the slightly off-kilter rhythm. “What More Can One Wish For?” employs an almost twelve-tone approach to the song. As well, the mid-tempo, loping beats also lull the listener with their hypnotic quality. The non-straightforward aspects of the rhythms add to the strangeness of the tracks, although the repetition can grow tiresome. Luckily, CK knows how to shake things up: the meditative, abstract clattering in “Sex a la Mode” is followed by the funky breaks of “Glad Kat.” “More Body than Soul” goes for some more Detroit-like electro, and the final track, “Song for Tone” returns us to the ether. A complex and worthwhile album.
