Notes

Channeling a more optimistic Jason Molina-style songwriting with the atmosphere of Wilco’s Being There, Arlo Aldo’s sophomore record emerges from 2013’s Zelie as a more mature and focused indie folk and alt-country timbre. The darkly hopeful tones that form House & Home (Future Oak Records) situate a cast of characters firmly in the mythos of indie Americana’s most earnest themes: family, hope, regret, love and death. Maybe it’s a moment of childhood innocence come head on with an encroaching darkness (“Wolves”). Maybe it’s a moment of ritual mourning for lost love (“House & Home”). Maybe it’s a moment that enfolds a long-simmering but unacknowledged love, demanding to be recognized (“Signs”). Or maybe a nostalgic plea for a partner’s love to triumph over the threat of departure (“Portraits”).

Musically, the album features stripped-down instrumentals alongside a layered vocal feast for your ears, simultaneously intimate and sweeping. In addition to the acoustic and electric guitar work of frontman David Manchester, the percussion of Brandon Forbes, bass by Susanna Meyer, and keys from Ariel Forbes, the band digs more deeply into the instrumental tradition of Americana by the inclusion of viola player Jessie Hoffman on tracks like “Civil War Bride” and “Wolves.” And throughout the entire record, gripping melodies and haunting harmonies permeate.
