Two of Air Liquide's early EPs are collected here on LIQUID AIR & MANDRAGORA, and their musical identity becomes increasingly clear, from the creepy ambience of "Things Happen" to the dark mutterings and acid throb of "Revelation." "Psy9" goes deep and thick with its bass, but they can also slow down to create atmospheric soundscapes, as on "Argon." They bring ethnic samples to the fore with "Unraveling My Curls," in which Mary Applegate is in full-on seduction mode. But "Liquid Men with Liquid Hearts" and "Liquid Air" both set forth in understated grooves, the latter bearing it plenty of acid. "Mandragora" drifts along as its subterreanean bass keeps it rooted, while "Liquid Men With Liquid Hearts (Bassline Mix)" blends all the best parts--groove, atmosphere, and soul--together for an unforgettable track.
