As great as NORTHERN SULFURIC SOUL is, SLEEPWALKING, Rae & Christian's follow-up, might be even better. Kicking off with the upbeat funk of "Blazing the Crop," the album exudes a warm bonhomie, continuing with the brightness of "Hold Us Down," featuring the the roots-influenced vocals of The Congos. Although Veba is sorely missed, the guest vocalist here and plenty talented: The Pharcyde perk up "It Ain't Nothing Like," and Bobby Womack souls up "Get a Life" until the cup overfloweth. And here, interestingly, the album take a tonal shift, bringing in heaps of melancholy. Kate Rogers steps into the liquid, moody "Not Just Anybody" that brings in a lone, echoing sax sample to emphasize the heartbreak. The instrumental "Trailing In The Wake" carries through on this mood by way of funk, and Tania Maria tops it off with the glorious "Vai Viver A Vida," which, for me, is the highlight of the album. Grand, dramatic, and heart-rending, that track is pure gold. The mood changes again once The Pharcyde return for the spry "Let It Go," while the operatic start of "Ready to Roll" gives way to cut, scratches and electro-funk. "Wake Up Everybody" brings back Bobby Womack, but in a more stripped-down setting, The soft-focused "Salvation" closes the album, and it feels as if it's we've been in a dream. But, no, we've only been sleepwalking.
