lifestyle
This 2-CD set has plenty of gems and obscure odds and ends, but suffers from some weird programming choices and dodgy track info. One thing that distinguishes this from other Wyatt comps are the glimpses of his collaborations as guest vocalist with other artists. Chronologically, it starts at the end of his time with Soft Machine, through Matching Mole and his solo work up through 1994, when it was released. The BBC version of "Moon in June" with lyrics changed to fit the occasion is brilliant and classic, maybe as good as the Wyatt/Ratledge/Hopper version of Soft Machine ever got on record. But the track info credits Wyatt with "voice and guitar" and calls this "previously unreleased", although it was originally on Soft Machine's "Triple Echo" 3-LP best-of set, and is now available on their Peel Sessions CD."Calyx" originally appeared as a wordless vocalise on the first album by Hatfield and the North, but here it has whimsical lyrics and is a live recording, but no info is given beyond the musicians' names. The Matching Mole era is covered by only vocal tracks, skipping over the longer instrumental jams.Rock Bottom and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard are over-represented here. The Rock Bottom tracks are unfortunately re-ordered, and some that should run together are separated. The version of "Soup Song" is here taken from the Peel Sessions. There's a smattering of other oddities: a few from Michael Mantler's The Hapless Child (his album of Edward Gorey songs) and Many Have No Speech; "I'm a Mineralist," from the Nick Mason/Carla Bley Fictitious Sports album; the odd little "Rangers in the Night," salvaged from the Miniatures compilation of one-minute songs; a cut from the Animals film soundtrack; a few 80s cuts from Dondestan and elsewhere. Nothing Can Stop Us, his quite substantial collection of singles on Rough Trade, gets only one track and it's by far not the best. Nothing at all from Old Rottenhat. All in all, this isn't an awful collection, just not too well thought out.
