One would think there'd be, at a minimum, a cool dozen classic solo piano/vocal pop records, in the vein of Nilsson Sings Newman, out there in the world by now. Quiet, nighttime records, reflective, relaxed - just vocals and a piano, for every song. Not many come to mind though - and why not? There are thousands upon thousands of acoustic guitar/vocal records, but when it comes to piano-led songs, somehow they always have arrangements mixed in - strings and horns and whatever. A well-written song can hold its own even in its most elemental state. Liam Hayes happened to write this 30-minute collection of songs very well, deciding they were best served raw, played on the piano - and that is how he serves them, with clear, open recordings by Steve Albini. A few mistakes are intentionally, jokingly(?) included, to suggest that the album was recorded live in one take (which it obviously wasn't) - and this becomes distracting after many listens. More You Becomes You does reward many listens. It's a singular work, possibly Hayes' most perfect creation (though its follow-up Fed is a near-equal classic). Very highly recommended.
