Paul Weller's career is one of peaks and troughs. After the triumphs that he celebrated as modrocker in The Jam he alienated with the polished soul pop of The Style Council more and more of his fans until he was even a time without recording contract in 1990. After a strong solo triad plates and the undeniable influence that his music had on the Britpop bands such as Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and Kula Shaker is Weller today fully rehabilitated. On the live album Days Of Speed he presents itself as a true English singer-songwriter, armed only with a guitar his songs. Initially it is a long sit, eighteen to the bone stripped down Weller songs, but once accustomed to the ugly sound of the semi-acoustic guitar you discover every turn turn a new gem in his songbook. The vocals of Weller is also very strong across the Board. A popular theory States that a good song also remains as it is played on an acoustic guitar. If this is the yardstick than by State the oeuvre of Paul Weller the test. A little production frills can give that little bit extra a plate, however, and the question is whether Weller has not with simplifying his music. This very rudimentary sound does quality of his songs not a right.
