Something about Scandinavia keeps producing great singer-songwriters. The obvious reference point for Hanne Hukkleberg's debut LITTLE THINGS would be Bjork, but her folksy and jazzy sensibilities put her in line with Emiliana Torrini as well. The quiet delicate lines on "Searching" sound as if it could have come from a fairy tale, while "Little Girl" has a strange carnivalesque quality. Hukkleberg's use of unexpected instruments add a sense of freshness and wonder to her tracks: the melancholy "Cast Anchor" adds not only a steel guitar into the mix, but also watery splashes and Hukkleberg's own vocal flutterings. Indeed, the vocals take fascinating turns, like jazzy scat-train on "Do Not As I Do." The styles vary, as well, from the lounge vibe of "Conversion" to the more romantic strings of "True Love." And even if I can't understand what she's saying on "Boble," it sounds beautiful anyway. A marvelous album.
