I totally agree with the 2 reviewers below. I too was disappointed at first, but it did eventually grow on me. Having said that, not liking Plateau or cEvin's other solo projects - this is the last Download album I would come to like & enjoy. Well, that's no quite true, the most recent "LingAM" is pretty damn good in my opinion! But everything else in-between, especially "Effector", is just not my cup of tea.

Bundis
his marks a significant shift in sound, as well as in personnel. first, spybey and p-orridge are both gone, leaving download as a key/western collaboration and making western's contribution to the download sound crystal clear in the process. second, this has absolutely no resemblance to anything "industrial", "post-industrial" or "goth" - it's a pure idm record. or is it? it doesn't fit cleanly into the "idm" box, it really pushes more towards "minimalist" techno.i'm actually not well versed in this style of music at all, i was dragged into it by the band and didn't find it compelling enough to explore further. for me, the late 90s were about messy guitar effects and orchestral post-rock; i've yet to really catch up with electronic music, other than to meet it half way when it merged with the instrumental rock i was listening to. as i'm approaching this from a point of relative ignorance, i'm having a hard time placing it within the context of anything other than key's career.i remember some murmurings when this was released about the choice of project name that was used. "it sounds like plateau!". plateau was key & western. why were they using the name download? download was key & dwayne......oh, yeah, & western. in all fairness, that question still resonates. download was supposed to be messy, abstract, bizarre, pushing boundaries...this record doesn't do anything like that. pretty much the entire disc from start to finish is in an easily countable 4/4 - 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and - even existing through large portions with little more than a bass drum for percussion. while fashionable at the time, this is anathema to what download was supposed to be! rather than play the beats off of noise generators and squelching synths, the decision on this disc was to play them off of rising ambience, string sections and soft, acid jazz piano parts.disappointing? at first, yes....but the disc does grow on you. it's really not fair to judge it by what it's not and i honestly don't know how to judge it other than to say that i like the ambient sections more than i like the minimalist sections.

This is the type of interesting release where people from different genres stumble across it. I'm sure most listeners were first from the EBM/Industrial camp as most Download releases fall under that category when this was first released. I'm sure many electronic music fans like myself still doesn't know that this release is. This still remains on my top 10 electronic music releases of all time, and I've basically studied two or three thousand electronic releases over the last 20 years. I am from the other side from you, not enjoying most of Downloads' or Skinny Puppy releases (except Remission/Bites/Too Dark Park). 'III' is a gem.

This release from Download marked the point in their short history were they became Plateau sounding, yet another side project of cEvin's Crew. When I got it I went in thinking that this would sound just like the previous album, if not maybe Furnace, but holy crap was I wrong. This was exactly like Plateau's first album and it wasn't that I hated it but I felt betrayed and mislead for some lame reason. If I wanted a Plateau album I would have bought one damn it. The CD features tracks with fairly simple drums that never change all the while synths and cEvin's distinctive random play comes in at times. I will say that the track "Flight Of Luminous Insects" sounds like a reversion of Pink Floyds "On The Run". Just listen and see for yourself. My favorite track is "Beauty In The Eyes" as it seems to have more variety than the others. The disc ends with a nice cello piece by Peggy Lee. No drums and great to fall asleep to. Never though I'd say that last part about a Download CD.
