Goll
Just acquired this, thinking the B-side would be a good opportunity to get a UK pressing of "Unknown Soldier" in reasonable condition for a sensible price. Unfortunately, it appears to be a completely different, later, alternative version, possibly recorded at the same sessions as the 1983 version of Lady, and this is not indicated in any of the available discographies. This 11'07 version is not available to hear anywhere online. It resembles a shortened version of Part 2, with fade in and fade out, and the first thing I noticed was extra reverb when compared to the original. But it gets worse, much worse. The lyric has essentially been bowdlerised, possibly in the interests of radio-friendliness. In the original, the pivotal "Them dey loot, yesThem dey fuck some of the women by force, yesThem dey rape, yesThem dey burn, yes"Is here replaced with an anodyne "Them dey burn" X4The backing vocals, magical in the original, sound thin and lacking in texture here. The "Lookowo!" bellowed like a sergeant-major is absent too. There are other minor changes which confirm it is a different recording and not just a re-edit.Most of all, it sounds like the recording was made under duress, against Fela's will, and he consequently sings without any real heart. The seething indignation of the original is sadly entirely absent. All in all, a curiosity, but a depressing one. The cover is a larger version of H. Cuadrado's kitsch artwork, as used on the Live In Amsterdam album.
