If you are a Durannie and fan of mid to late 80s latin hip hop/freestyle remixers such as Latin Rascals, Kurtis Mantronik & Arthur Baker as I am, then this is a great little remix package, which serves as a companion piece to the 2010 Notorious reissue. The 2010 Notorious reissue contains most of the 12” mixes of the singles from that period, along with some of the rare Masterdisk remixes that were only available as a limited edition. This EP collects together the remaining mixes that are not included on the reissue to give, in conjunction with the reissue, what appears to be a full collection of the remixes from the Notorious era (to this non-hardcore Durannie anyway!)The aforementioned Latin Rascals & Kurtis Mantronik are both represented on remixing duties here, for Notorious & Vertigo respectively. I personally feel the Latin Rascals mix improves on the standard 12” mix substantially, but the Kurtis Mantronik mix on the EP is not as strong as that on the reissue. This a minor quibble however, as it’s great just to be able to have it in this format. Please be aware though that the 3 remaining tracks are dub mixes, and therefore contain little of the vocals from the original tracks, so to some listeners they might be found to be disappointing. If you like these 3 songs on the original album and are looking for remixes with the “song” intact, then the remixes for you are the ones to be found on the reissue. Personally, I love percussive, choppy mixes from this era, so I’m a very happy bunny indeed. It may only be a small detail, but I do like the fact that the EP has been given new artwork, which, although brand new, is very in keeping with the the Notorious & Skin Trade single releases, an extremely nice touch. In summary then, it’s a nice little remixes & rarities package that, admittedly may be too much of a niche product for the casual listener, works best viewed/listened to as an accompaniment to the 2010 Notorious reissue.
