I was happy to pick this up for £1 at a record fair (the much missed fair at the Brighton Centre, which I must have attended, both as seller and buyer, for over 30 years). This one dealer used to take out about eight stalls and cram them with psychedelia, soul, punk, world music, classical and tons of weird stuff on vinyl and CD, all at rock-bottom prices. Some of it was brand new, still sealed. He was selling stuff that was £40 in the shops, say for a garage punk or psychedelia box set, knocking 'em out for £10, sometimes cheaper if he was sick of the sight of it.Anyway - I digress. This CD has a bunch of low-key psychedelia, edging into acid folk and hippy musings, from a mixture of no-hopers and one-song wonders, all forgotten and fallen heroes of the psychedelic campaign. The tracks that stick in my mind are the ones by The Crystal Chandelier, The Whatever, The Hobbits and The World Column. Some of the tracks verge on the morbid, dwelling on mortality, drug psychosis, despair, loneliness and death. There's no sleeve-notes, so you'll just have to make up your stories about these psychedelic curiosities.
