Mr.Savik
I have to admit that I mostly ignore MTV and so I missed all the hoopla about Fun. despite catching a glimpse of the “We Are Young” video a couple of times. As I heard more singles, the catchiness and brilliance of the songs started to sink in so I finally decided to give the album a spin.Wow! I had no idea of the breadth and depth of the talent here as the band took elements of, to me, Irish Rock, New York Punk, and the golden years of Queen. A little like Scissor Sisters, Fun. mine the best from the past but polish it and deliver modern classics. On the surface, most songs seem to revolve around bars and drinking but, under the surface, a poetic depth is revealed where lyrical longing and redemption entwine with harsh reality and a revolutionary spirit.Clever time changes, like in the anthemic “We Are Young”, and clever arrangements make this album an enjoyable listen again and again. Even the mixing of musical styles, as demonstrated in “All Alone” and “Some Nights (Intro)” are impeccably performed. Each song on the album complements the whole and even the addition of a bonus track, which can sometimes be a dubious plan, doesn’t stop this album from being brilliant. After listening, it’s clear to see why MTV made all the hoopla! It’s one of the best albums of the year.
