Beginning in December 2004 and concluding in March 2005, Juliana Hatfield released a total of 31 previously unreleased outtakes, demos and new recordings on "the honor system" via her official website at julianahatfield.com. Each download was offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Juliana posted an essay entitled "Farmstand Ethics" to accompany the downloads which explained her project in more detail, and checked in at the outset and conclusion of the project to provide liner notes.

The March 5, 2005 update was to upgrade the sound quality and bitrate of tracks 3, 4 and 7. At the conclusion of the project all 31 tracks were released at a 192kbps bitrate.

Juliana's Honor System downloads would continue with new batches of unreleased tracks released via julianahatfield.com in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011. Some of the tracks from the original batch of Honor System Downloads were reposted in these updates.

Beginning with the December 2007 update, track 11 was retitled "My Enemy #2 (Beautiful Creature)."

Tracks 17, 18, 21, 22, 27 and 29 were previously released on the promo-only CD-R New Material 1999, which preceded the 2000 albums Beautiful Creature and Total System Failure.

In August 2006 nine new tracks were added (August 2006 Downloads) and the links and liner notes for the original Honor System Downloads were removed. 22 of the original 31 tracks were still available, albeit in a slightly different order and with the Paypal links removed. Tracks 6, 10, 13, 14, 20, 24, 26, 27 and 28 were deleted in this update.

In November 2006 a warning was displayed on julianahatfield.com reading "The download experiment will soon
come to an end. So act, or don't, accordingly." The downloads were temporarily removed in the December 2006 update.

Due to popular demand, Juliana reposted the original downloads twice more: in October 2007 and in March 2009. In some of these updates fan favorites "5th of July," "Perfect Stranger," "Fireflies" and "Bad Dream" resurfaced.

In the site update of March 18, 2011 all of the original Honor System Downloads files were deleted from julianahatfield.com and not reposted.
