EBM didn't seem to be big in Japan back in the late eighties and early nineties, or at least i havent heard any bands coming from there, apart from 2nd Communication that is. 2nd Comm. definitely has a unique sound compared to European and American bands in the scene, focusing almost entirely on hectic, distorted and loud beats with melodies only adding a bit of flavour to the intense drum assault. Their songs are also very long, monotonous and unstructured with very few vocals consisting mostly of repetitive shouts. And all this is of course heavily distorted. On their first album this very unique approach to ebm is very underlined, with songs mostly consisting of monotonous beats and the shortest of the five songs clocking just barely under eight minutes. Obviously this type of music is very difficult to listen to and i don't think this album really rewards the listener for trying, as there is no real progession within the songs, just repetition of the same elements over and over. Then again, on the dancefloor this stuff would be awesome, at least in the hands of a skilled dj. Too bad most of the songs sound very much the same, so there isn't much to say about individual songs. Sow Sow The Propaganda slightly stands out from the rest thanks to more straightforward beat and a great melody consisting of either a distorted guitar or guitarlike synth. Count Down also has a nice raveish melody in it.So, can i recommend this? Listen this stuff from youtube first, and if you like what you hear, get Brain That Binds The Body instead. 2nd Communication has such a repetitive and monotonous sound without much variation so a full album is not really worth it for a casual listener. But, if you are like me and just love the unique sound this band has, this is propably their best full-length album.

DRP was another Japanese EBM band.
