John Peel - "Don Van Vliet - Rock music's only true genius"

John Peel in 2002
"I have had the De Montfort Hall recording in my collection for many years and it stands up there as one of Don's most amazing live performances, the rapport with the audience is superb. Although it takes intense listening in the early part of the show owing to the recording quality, it builds into a great performance from the Spotlight Kid era tour"

utterly awful. glad i only paid a few quid for it. still a few quid too much. nicely presented but almost completely unlistenable. why bother?

Meztihn
Absolutely terrible. Worst 45 (!) dollars I've ever spent. Was so excited for this too... Do not buy unless you want a pretty yellow Beefheart record to put on the wall or you really just don't believe me and everyone else that has commented. This is really bad quality even for a bootleg - that it was pressed shows poor morals from the label responsible.

Arar
Just wasted 35 bucks on this piece of crap. I am soooooo disappointed. I am a true Beefheart fan so I might keep it but may sell it back to the record store at a big loss. I can't believe anyone would want to profit on this after his death. I have had many bootleg recordings from this time which where very good.

Unde
Unlistenable. The worst quality of recording pressed onto vinyl I've ever heard.

Freighton
Also, my copy has 2 Side A labels on the first 12". Is anyone else's copy mispressed that way?

Shadowbourne
I would recommend this for the true Beefheart die-hard freak ONLY. "Rough" and "Raw" is putting it lightly.

FRAY
Unlistenable for sure. The whole thing sounds poor at best. Buy to have, not to hear.

Hrguig
Side one is unlistenable. Very low and unintelligible.

Jieylau
Can someone please comment on sound quality, band performance etc?

Ygglune
These are mastered from John Peel's tapes. He said of them in 2002 "I have had the De Montfort Hall recording in my collection for many years and it stands up there as one of Don's most amazing live performances, the rapport with the audience is superb, Although it takes intense listening in the early part of the show owing to the recording quality, it builds into a great performance from the Spotlight Kid era tour".

FLIDER
After one listen:The band is obviously killing it left and right and Beefheart sounds amazing. The sound quality is pretty brutal, though, and it's a real shame because this would be incredible if it were recorded better. The first few minutes of side one are downright awful and unintelligible. There is a spike in quality in the middle of the second side and then it's kind of patchy up until the end. Great setlist, though! It sounds about like what you'd expect from a rough recording around 1972 but it's definitely no Hendrix at Monterey. This is for Beefheart fans, not the casual listener.
