Aloo
This was always one of my favourites back in the day. Clearly not what most people would have expected from a band which features Fast Eddie, but definitely a welcome change of pace and style. Time has been kind to this album: unlike a lot of music from around that time, it still sounds as fresh as it did when I first heard it back in 1983. NWOBHM sounds were clearly on their last legs in 1983, yet many UK bands were still clinging on to them. However, on this record, the band seem to be looking towards a more American-influenced future, just as US hard rock/metal was about to take over from where NWOBHM left off, sadly leaving 100s of British "pub metal" bands behind and stuck in the era of the "Metal For Muthas" albums.Listening to it again now, well over 30 years later, it's interesting to hear just how similar it sounds to a lot of much later "hair metal" (Skid Row, etc), yet somehow manages to sound raw and down-to-earth, while remaining free of any hair/glam/stadium rock cliches. I don't know if any of those "hair" bands were influenced by this, but, with hindsight, this album actually sounds at least 2-3 years ahead of its time, even though blues-influenced hard rock was hardly something new. But the riffs here sound really fresh, with some slightly unusual-sounding rhythms at times, which put this album into a league of its own. Such a shame that they couldn't maintain the high standard on subsequent albums...
