Five Thirty (also known as 5:30) were a 'new mod' band who came out of North London in the early 90s, though originally formed in 1983 whilst still at school near Oxford. Bridging a gap between The Jam and The Stone Roses, they came to prominence alongside the Thames Valley bands such as Ride and Chapterhouse, picking their own path with a combination of Beatles-y harmonies, infectious basslines, psychedelic guitars and liberal use of the wah-wah pedal. Led by the beguiling Tara Milton, they released a string of singles afforded Single Of The Week accolades and won legions of fans with their blistering live shows. Signing to East West records in 1990, they released their proper debut single Abstain on July 9th. This was followed by Air Conditioned Nightmare later that year, and then 13th Disciple and Supernova preceded the release of Bed on August 19th 1991. Their last release, You, followed in October of that year, before disbanding after negotiating themselves out of their East West contract in 1992.
