ERICK reside in the same Indie creek of Jazz Rock as does LEFT HAND RIGHT HAND. They create a brash slowish Indie Rock with a tincture of R 'n' B, Reggae and Jazz thrown in for good measure. Here you have frantic clockwork rhythms, runaway sequences, novelty percussion and a sense of studied insanty. The BONZO DOG-esque familiarity of "Beast" sounds so familiar, it could have been part of your world since childhood. Experimental prose is uttered in a style like MAGAZINE's "The Book" with the same sinister atmosphere, and they search the non-structured darkness at several points on the album. "2 Ways 2 Love You" has a sort of JULEE CRUISE-given-fierce-beef-feel, blazing away at full speed during the chorus. According to the promo we received when they sent this album, "Martini 2000" had recieved some airplay on Radio 1, and the future looked rosy. But as good as the musicianship is, this is probably too quirky and novelty to appeal to a general or Indie audience particularly widely, and probably too smugly artistic to reach many of those who would find fascination in many of the pieces. Pity, as this album has some splendid moments. Originally reviewed for Metamorphic Journeyman.
