Formerly "The Tropics" from Norfolk, Virginia. When the band was offered a contract along with a move to NYC not all the members felt like pulling up stakes. Those who did became "The Lost Tropics" and so far as I know this was their only album.

Thank you, I never would have guessed they were still together. I helped paint the Escher copy sign over Cogan's way back in the seventies. Most of the musicians who hung out and played there are still in the area. I suspect their 100k sales record might have been advance sales, if they had retailed that many I should have expected more recordings. Cannot say myself though.

Woody is a friend of mine, he still plays, awesome guy.

I just got a hold of their promotional copy. Photocopied insert and all.

Further notes on The Tropics - A Hot Band >> The gig at Virginia Beach with Mink DeVille and The Ramones was at the Peppermint Beach Club, and the band never got paid. When Bonnie Raitt sat in, she insisted on having her own drummer play instead of Clarke Thrasher. He was not pleased. Will Spady played drums and Woody Nordan played guitar with the band in their final days in Tidewater before the others moved to New York. The Lost Tropics lived in the city for a year or two before they got the MCA offer.

You are correct, The Tropics, A Hot Band was the precursor to The Lost Tropics. They were based in Norfolk, VA and played from 1974 to about 1978 in Tidewater, Charlottesville, Key West and points up and down the East Coast. Former members who did not go on to join The Lost Tropics included Clarke Thrasher on drums and vocals; Woody Allen (see The Survivors, Key West band) on guitar, vocals, sax; Tom Gardner, aka Dr Nino, on percussion and vocals, instigator of the dance; Tim Shepherd on lead guitar and vocals. The band's regular gig was at Cogan's in Ghent and other venues included the Omni Hotel, Holiday Inn Scope, several Virginia Beach clubs, warm up act for The Ramones and Mink De Ville, Bonnie Raitt sat in one night. They played a mix of 60's Motown covers, jazz by Coltrane and others, dance tunes depending on the gig, but mostly originals by band-members. Some of those are on The Lost Tropics album. The Lost Tropics sold about 100K albums, would have been more successful with a producer other than Roma Baran who also produced Laurie Anderson and who did not have an ear for commercial sound. The Lost Tropics perform today in New York at various venues as The Jerry James Band.
