Tailor Made sees Bobbi Humphrey not just shifting labels to Epic, but also changing her musical direction quite a bit. This album is a shift from the jazz-funk work that the Mizell brothers were producing for her at Blue Note, no, on this album Bobbi Humphrey has taken musical control, which was something she was apparently denied at Blue Note, and decided to go down a slicker, mellower and more commercial route. This could be seen as a financial sell-out, but a fair slice of the pie was something else she was apparently denied at Blue Note, so who can blame her. Musically, this album is full of lush strings, funky bass lines and a full-force of backing vocals, everything that mid to late seventies soul and jazz had in abundance. Unlike a lot of musicians who were attracted by the potential commercial pay-off of following the disco agenda though, this album really pulls it off. One of the many things Bobbi Humphrey was good at was surrounding herself with top class writers, musicians, producers, etc. so even though there’s a bit of bandwagon jumping going on here, it's all done very tastefully. As with all her albums the flute playing is truly sublime, the production is amazing and the musicianship is faultless, this woman really is a class act.
