OTANO
Don't really enjoy the other albums I've heard, wonder if this used a different producer or what? I enjoy this release. a lot.

Tenius
this band is over-rated. however, they're good enough to be interesting enough to check out. i picked this up in a discount bin for $3 after hearing the record before this in a friend's car a few times, and that's about the maximum i would have paid for it based on that level of exposure. but i'm glad that i did pick it up.think radiohead. think syd barrett. think sonic youth. think paul mccartney. consider some non-standard time signatures. now mix that all together and you get the animal collective.while hardly the revolutionary sound that the media has declared them to have, while hardly the realization of the hype that has built up around them, it's still a damn fine pop record.but it is a pop record. it's just a new kind of pop. and a band doesn't come around with a new kind of pop every year.and j likes pop, he just likes good pop. this is good pop.good pop does not lend itself well to long, pretentious reviews. all you need to know is that you will find it catchy, you will nod your head, you may shake your booty a little. but what makes it good pop is that it's also complicated enough to enjoy as music, it's not just a social trick for shallow idiots.it'll take a few listens, but after those few listens you won't be able to get it out of your head.the staff at pitchfork has an altar built for them, where they sacrifice goats to them on a daily basis...and while you may be justified in stating that what pitchfork declares to be messianic [see the strokes, devendra, trail of dead] usually ends up to be fluff, in this case i would agree that this band has something special. somebody will steal this sound (or at least the upbeat half of it) and write a handful of multi platinum records based off of it. it may even turn the industry upside down.

Steel balls
This is an extremely important album and band for modern music. This band has defined a sound that has become popular but is, at it's core very experimental. This album is my personal favorite, however each album has a different vibe and Animal Collective pulls the listener away from their expectations. They do not have a bad album. Don't worry about pitchforks affinity for Animal Collective, if anything they deserve it. AC will be relevant long after pitchfork is gone. This is an experimental band (look at their live shows) with a large following, I consider it an accomplishment for AC. If only the masses could take from the music what is so important about it: it's disfunction, it's drone, it's repetitiveness, it's tribal roots but yet it's complexity and emotion.
