This record starts out as pure pop with a definite Merseybeat feel, then moves into the sphere of folk-rock. Overall, I enjoy the pure pop more, but that's my thing. The first cut, "I Don't Wanna Lose You Baby", is a bald attempt to copy the style of the Righteous Brothers, which succeeds pretty well. Then comes an original, "Should I", which features an unusual structure (verse-bridge-2nd bridge-raveup); then one of Mann-Weil's lesser efforts, "The Girl Who Sang the Blues", with one line changed to name-check Brian Epstein. Next is my favorite song on the album, "Funny How Love Can Be", a perfect pop confection, and then an energetic, if rather formulaic, R&B (in the old sense) number, "The Woman in You" (written by Jeremy Clyde). Side A ends with a virtually note-for-note re-creation of the Byrds' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man".Side B opens with the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic "I Have Dreamed" (from "The King and I"), followed by "Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)", which they are a bit too precious to really pull off. Next comes Sonny & Cher's "Baby Don't Go", which sounds a bit odd sung by two guys, and then a really nice version of Phil Ochs' "There But for Fortune", a song exquisitely suited to their style. The record wraps up by returning to the pop sound of "These Things You Don't Forget".
