Notes: This was the third event in the Space Exchange series at the Thunderbird, which is collectively run by David Throckmorton, Chris Parker, Colter Harper, Matt Booth and me. This performance was captured on an H1 Zoom recorder. Except for a small bit of compression and EQ, this is presented as the audience heard it.
Why the second set (and not the first) for this "official bootleg" CDR? The first set was good, and all of it is posted online on youtube if you hunt for it. I believe this set was where the band has really come into its own. This was only our second gig, and the collective attitude I wanted to achieve has set hold here. The music moves in directions I didn't expect.
Take for example the relatively low-key opening improvisation; it reminds me of some of the group improvisations of King Crimson, although i don't think anyone would mistake our performance for one of theirs. Then there's there's Ian's Groove, in which Ian sets up a clear hip-hop beat that Throck and Paul pick up immediately. You can hear one of the, apologizing, since I was otherwise looking to close the set. But that's how it goes. Give me a band that surprises me over one in which I predict what they will do, any day.
