Taped the song back in 1971. At that time, I didn't know Cher's original version. Well, around 1977/78, my old Telefunken reel to reel tape deck stopped working, and Nicolai's rendition was lost to me. Been hunting it down since then - well, on an on and off basis, that is - and listening to it again just a few minutes ago was a real blast from the past.The lyrics tell a different story than those of Cher's version, however, both deal with the topic of alienation. Musically, Nicolai's version is a bit faster-paced, with a lot of oomph at the bottom end - brilliant bassline, really. Nicolai's voice has a softer tinge and is deeper than Cher's, quite a good fit for a gypsy-themed song. Overall, I really can't tell which version I like better. This is definitely a great cover version, highly recommended.
