Legiac, a collaboration between the Funcken brothers and Cor Bolten, debuted with MINGS FEANER on Sending Orbs, the much lauded ambient label. "Coar Wacks" slinks into life, as if out of primordial ooze, before the bongo madness and blipping of "Dide Skin" take over. "Faex Decimate" has a Bola-like melancholy melody, though with much more aggressive percussion, while a whisper of funk bass grounds the floating flute of "Tretz Dizm." The quasi-classical "Hallux Abb" drifts in, until "Pinch Era" brings things down with gentle ebbs and flows. The title track offers up some mellow downtempo, while "Vega Orbid" veers into Arabic-tinged acid, which leaves its trace on "Span Feaner" before "Opaque" gurgles the album to a close. Quite nice.

Yet another album from Don & Roel Funcken, this time teaming up with Cor Bolten who released an album with the Funcken brothers under the moniker of Dif:use. Here we have "Mings Feaner", their first release as Legiac. Anyone familiar with Funckarma and Quench will be at home right from the start. Their trademark broken beats, rhythms and melodies are still here, but with a darker, more eerie approach that is particularly apparent on the beatless tracks. It's still recognizable as a Sending Orbs release, but not as much so as it was on previous releases on the label. The tracks vary from warm electronica to weird ambient, although I think the ambient sounds were more engaging on the Dif:use "Febrile" CD, and the IDM style done better on "Elaztiq Bourbon 5", also on Sending Orbs. "Tretz Dizm" and "Vega Orbid" are among my favourite tracks, although some of the ambient ones like "Opaque" are rather dull and don't quite fit the rest of the album. The artwork by Jeroen Advocaat is once again outstanding. The metal orb on the cover is taken apart layer by layer, revealing an almost creepy looking skeletal interior. Overall, this is a good album marred by some dull tracks and the fact that there are no real surprises.

I. Am. In. Sonic. Heaven. Such an intricate shimmering world. That unbelievably unique sound. This is one sublime piece. The funckens with bolten shining bright. My picks: Jed Dalton is that trademark sick crunchy basswork spiked with the untouchable sense of rhythm that they have. The title track is back to some of my most beloved funcken sound. Deep layered washes with gorgeous melodies and well placed environmentals that just keep growing and morphing, weaving my definition of bliss. Every track is mesmerizing though, these just jiggle my synapses most on initial run, this one will get lots of airtime. Couldn't recommend this album more, masterful and epic.
