In 5 simple tracks and after what I referred to my friend as a "lost demo from the 1970s" this easily has become my favorite Boris/Merzbow collaboration almost instantly. I respect Merzbow's creative ability, but this fusion, in my opinion, allows both artists to completely shine for the first time, almost as if it is the actual first time. I personally prefer Boris' sound to overwhelm slightly to carry on the tune while Merzbow fills any remaining space with atmospheric sounds, reminiscent of his appearance on Heavy Rocks. "Klatter" sounds purposely recorded as a washed-out, tube-amplified demo seemingly lost in a stack of records. When you give it a listen, it is as if the record explains to you why it is only 5 tracks and why it exists only as a vinyl. Without spoiling too much, "Introduction" is exactly as it seems: a moody intro into a revamped "Akuma no Uta". Side A finishes with the epic "Jane" featuring some of the most raw wailing by Wata and percussion by Atsuo that brings you back to earlier days, and acts as a midway point in the album, rightfully so before flipping the record. Side B keeps your attention with "Klatter 1" as it rises up from the silence, making the period of silence between tracks A3 and B1 part of the atmosphere. A revamped "Naki Kyoku" completes the record with you wanting more, and a feeling as though you have just awoken from some sort of trance, because though the record fluctuates, its composition feels constant, blurring the entire album almost into one song or sound. This simple, humble record took me completely by surprise and I hope my review is in agreement with Boris fans.
