Poised, petite and powerful, YADi knows exactly what she wants when it comes to her music, creating forward-thinking, instantly catchy calls to arms that reflect everything life has thrown at her so far. At just 24, she is a beautiful bundle of contradictions, the product of a genetic cocktail that mixes Algerian on her father's side with Norwegian and Italian on her mother's. For YADi - born in South London - her music is an aural kaleidoscope of influences, one that mixes the music of her heritage with the pop of the future, creating a forward-thinking sound that sets her apart from the crowd.“Although totally British, my heritage is a real mix,” she says and one suffused with music. When YADi was a child her dad would play her his old vinyl albums, mixing rock, soul, gospel and Jazz. This education sewed a seed and created a desire to constantly investigate the past, be it in terms of music or in terms of her own heritage. “We used to spend Saturday afternoons going through his collection; Frank Zappa, Joan Armatrading, The Police, Aretha Franklin. He also used to play a lot of Raï, Gnawa and Malian music. When I listen to it now it makes me weep. I have this weird nostalgia for North Africa without ever having lived there.
