Tycho is best described as an excellent copycat of Boards of Canada. This artist uses similar instruments, cd structure (breaking up a beat-oriented track with a short ambient interlude), child vocals in the background, etc etc. Surely there's nothing wrong with following in the same footsteps of greater artists when done right, as Tycho certainly has. Or at least, as he did in his prior album. In 2004 Tycho released Sunrise Projector.... which is the exact same album as Past is Prologue except for 15 minutes! This is absolutely disguisting to see an artist change the playlist, throw in a few crappy remixes, and rebox an old album labelled as something new. While we might expect this with more popular music, I'd like to think electronic musicians hold themselves to a higher standard. Because this album is little more than a commercialized version of a prior album, I am forced to give it my lowest rating (while Sunrise Projector received my highest). Shame on Merck for printing this mislabelled product. If you have to choose between the two, the few differences in the Sunrise Projector cd are better than the small changes here. Don't be fooled into purchasing both!

Sunrise Projector came first, and Past is Prologue (the title of which makes sense if you think about it) has a slightly remixed version of the same artwork. What did you think you were getting from an album called "Past is Prologue" with pretty much the same art? Pay closer attention.

Personally I think he sounds quite different from Boards of Canada. The similarities you draw are rather superficial.

Wow. A bit over the top are we?? This release was intended to expose Tycho's music to a much wider audience than his previous self-released CDs that he had manufactured himself before. There was no intent to deceive anyone by changing track titles, or any trickery. You seem to have some misdirected anger about not getting new Tycho material on a timeline you prefer, but that has nothing to do with record labels releasing music to try and expose it to new fans.

This is a great chilled out soundscape album. Yes, it does sound like Boards of Canada but I personally think its a little harsh to dismiss a listen based on this. There are only so many genres of music in this world and everything else comes from that and if it is good then it will stand the test of time and be remembered. For me, this is one such Album. If you want to be a music snob then go and drag out your old BOC albums and listen to them for the umpteenth time, but if like me you are always looking for something new, regardless of weather or not it sounds like something else, then this is definitely worth a listen at the very least. Tracks 1 is a melodic plodding tune which is awesome while the next couple have some wonderful soundscapes with the beat coming in halfway through. In fact a lot of the tracks are like that, with the melody building until the beat comes in around the middle. Wonderful collection.

Tycho is special in that he is one of the VERY few artists to actually recieve a negative review from the online record store, Boomkat. My review of this album almost mirrors theirs - the music is pleasent, well produced, but unashamedly influenced (almost to the point of plagerism) by Boards of Canada. From the soft melodies, the lo-fi approach to sound design, the sweeping analogue synths, and the childlike vocals, Tycho has done an admirable job of mimicking our favourite Scots. Now I have heard a lot of bad BOC clones over the years (and plenty of fake MP3s tagged as the duo), but at least Tycho had the sense to take the positive aspects of BOC's production, and create an album that is easy on the ears from start to finish. But as you have probably gathered, it is incredibly difficult to get past the influence and listen to the album as an original concept. If BOC didn't exist, this album would be a revelation - as it stands, it is a mere reflection of an already well-established sound. On a more positive note, I haven't heard any of his other material, and the guy is clearly a solid producer, so if he was take his skills and apply them in a way which reflects his true self and not his attempts to imitate his inspirations, then i'm sure he will succeed. And if you go to his website, you'll also find his design portfolio which is much more interesting and unique.

I realize I'm replying to a 7-year old post but, how do you feel about him now?
