This is a difficult one to judge. Top sound quality (FM broadcast), loads of energy and a great setlist, but... What an unbelievably sloppy performance!! U2 have always been a fantastic live band, but on this particular evening they really weren't up to their usual standards. There are playing mistakes everywhere, in just about every song. Possibly because it was only the second night of the pre-War tour, and the guys hadn't had the opportunity yet to properly rehearse their new setlist. Things like this do happen of course. Pro: "New Year's Day" has alternate lyrics compared to the final album version, as this song was obviously still being worked out at this point. Very interesting. Plus, the often underrated single-track "A celebration" makes a rare appearance! Con: there are so many audible missteps that I simply cannot fully enjoy this concert anymore. And to make things worse, my favourite song "A celebration" (track 14) has been marred by a skip at the 0:16 timemark, which reveals that the recording was transferred from a vinyl source (probably the 'Catholic or Protestant' bootleg). Damn!My verdict: for completists and non-musicians only. Get the widely available december 6th show at Hammersmith Palais instead (U2 - In Concert-295) - that one has the exact same musical ingredients and passion, but a LOT more focus.
