Five of the Avalon Ballroom tracks have been released before (on the Grow Fins box), but “Down In The Bottom”, “Don’t Start Me To Talkin’”, “The Sun Is Shining” and “St James Infirmary” have never been released before. This set grows in confidence and sound quality with the Captain starting off a little bit buried but by Tupelo he's really starting to let rip. St James Infirmary especially is a great find - solid gold. If you're expecting any avant-gardisms you won't find it on the Avalon tracks - this is a pure blues band who play and sing with a deep love and knowledge of the material. The sound quality is a lot better than other bootlegs from the time (and better than other Keyhole releases, the VU La Cave for instance). It's really very clear. The second part of the cd is a bit more suspect and not really as advertised. There's more from the Grow Fins set (1967 demos - not radio shows at all) and the final four tracks are from John Peel's Top Gear, January and May 1968. Call On Me is from 1965 and the second version of Somebody In My Home is from an acetate either 66 or 67.If you're a fan then it's a decent addition to the collection and a great insight into the original, blues-based sound of the Magic Band.
