Utchanat
By the mid-'00s, Tangerine Dream had stopped being simply a group with a linear musical progression, and turned into a never-ending production line of synth music (including compilations and live albums, a staggering 78 CDs were released between 2000 and 2007.) Typically, most of these were aimed at the most casual of fans (the compilations) and the hardcore obsessive fans (almost everything else.) Nevertheless, a number of limited edition singles and EPs made their way into the world as limited editions, containing material every bit as strong as the group's main albums. For those who missed them, or don't have a credit card with a large enough limit to pick up every release thrown forth from TDI and Eastgate, the Booster albums are pretty helpful. In particular, this first volume is a collection every bit as worthy as the best of the group's more recent albums.Other than the drum'n'bass inspred 'Ça Va - Ça Marche - Ça Ira Encore', everything here comes from the highly successful 2005 - 2007 era of the group - group, in this case, meaning Edgar Froese for the most part. Two contemporary sounding pieces are Thorsten Quaeschning compositions, from the wonderful Metaphor EP - Part One having more in common with the melodic laptop clicks'n'cuts of Type Records's releases of this era than anything in the TD canon - and a few tracks are remixes of Schmoelling-era tracks, but otherwise everything else here is Edgar solo.Much of the material has a chugging analogue feel to it, bringing to mind some of the group's early '80s music - in particular 'The Greek Mirror', and the sublimely beautiful 'Tangines On And Running' - whilst modern beats accompany energetic tracks like 'One Night in Space' and 'The Bells of Accra'. The reworkings of older pieces are interesting, although not always successful - 'Sphinx Lightning' is hardly improved by a limp beat and cutting off the track's climax; 'Lady Monk' is an interesting and bold reworking, but ultimately leaves one wanting to listen to the original 'Zen Garden'.) More enjoyable are the excerpts from 'Tangram' and 'Logos', which show off how ahead of the time the group work in the early '80s, as both sound completely up-to-date with little more than a modern beat added to them.Sadly, later Booster releases would increasingly rely on album tracks and archived pieces, making them a little redundant as companions to the main albums. Thankfully, this first release in the series is an excellent release, and an essential purchase for anyone impressed by releases such as Jeanne D'Arc and Springtime in Nagasaki.
