Halloween
Like both the previous 2 albums, the A side of the first disc is, in the main, pretty authentic blues. There's also the addition of the hippy Going Up Country and the heavier sounding Boogie Music. The flip side starts OK with a fairly amplified version of See That My Grave is Kept Clean but this is followed by the very weird and weak Parthenogenesis. They failed at whatever they were trying to achieve with this suite, it really is a pointless waste of time. The second disk contains Refried Boogie which gives the listener a taste of live Canned Heat getting their boogie on but they don't recapture the heavy, rich sound of Fried Hockey Boogie from their previous album, this is a little self indulgent, especially Side D, and sounds at times as if they forgot anyone was actually listening. The album has got more variety than the earlier albums and it may well be the best document of what Canned Heat were about but it isn't as cohesive, engaging or strong as either of the first two Canned Heat releases.

louc.patterson Parthenogenesis 'weird and weak'?Neither criticism is valid. Parthenogenesis is progressive. Parthenogenesis is experimental. Either you can follow these cats into the musical unknown, or you can't. Progressive + experimental does not necessarily = strong. Im sorry that we don’t share the same opinion
