Gravelblade
Mad props to Coldcut, who have run one of the best electronic music labels, Ninja Tune, for over two decades now. And with SOUND MIRRORS, they continue to forge their own identity by inviting a slew of guest artists, whether with the stop-start folk of John Matthias on "Man In A Garage" or the scratches and South Asian psychedelia punctated by Roots Manuva on "True Skool." "Just For The Kick" harkens back to their classic sampling madness, this time with a house beat, but the soul (provided in no small part by Robert Owens) of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" somehow comes out stronger. But Coldcut has always been eclectic in their influences and tastes: Saul Williams' touching spoken-word ode to families and life on "Mr Nichols" conveys a quiet beauty, while the folk reappears, replete with cello and singing saw, on "A Whistle And A Prayer," with disaffected vocals from Andrew Broder from Fog. Mike Ladd, on the other hand, adds some swagger to the more aggressive rock energy of "Everything Is Under Control," leaving poet Amiri Baraka to take up the mantle on the driving "Boogieman." They take their politics international on "Aid Dealer," and they bring back the house with some African flair on "This Island Earth." "Colours the Soul" returns to a hazy folk psychedelia, before the title track drifts into being, gathering instruments as it goes, as if channeling The Cinematic Orchestra. It's every bit as grand as eclectic as Ninja Tune itself. On the bonus disc, we're treated to classic Coldcut tunes, from the original sampling slam of "Beats + Pieces" to the iconic remix of Eric B & Rakim's "Paid in Full" with its unforgettable Ofra Haza sample. Two hits from their major label appearances show up as well, with "Stop This Crazy Thing" and their tender cover of the classic songbook track, "Autumn Leaves." The Qemists round out the bonus disc with a drum'n'bass thrash remix of "Everything Is Under Control" -- a chance of pace, to be sure. But wholly in line with the Coldcut aesthetic.
