“I ain’t no rocket,Just a shooting star ....”It’s been more years than I can count since I last saw Willy Deville. I mean I actually had his phone number, hand written, and torn from a green legal pad, with a bullet drawn between each set of numbers ... but that was all more than a life time ago, and that’s who Willy thought he was then. Here on his latest release ‘Pistola,’ Willie has finally found himself, the genius of a musical artist that he is, sounding self assured, with fine funky and deeply moving, late night, the weather’s about to change, group of relentless songs ... songs that still stroll, but with his childish swagger kept in check; though I imagine it’s sitting right there in his back pocket, just to remind him of where he’s been and the course he’s set his adult feet to traveling. His voice has brilliantly aged, and suits this selection of tunes like he has seldom done before. There’s an honesty to the country picking, and the cover of the album bespeaks a truth folks like Steve Earle only wish they could convey. This is a very personal feel to the release of his new material, and the covers are obviously deeply cherished. 'Pistola' is not an album for everyone, but if you’re one of those people who doesn’t cry out when they accidentally slice themselves with a razor blade, then this is a release you will enjoy as much as anything from Dr. John's 'Night Tripper.' A totally unexpected album, full of soul, and as dry an haunting as a midnight summer breeze swirling mystic energy all around you ... only this time, the pistola ain't for show.Crack the door, walk inside ... you can’t stop now, because “I Remember The First Time.”Review by Jenell Kesler
