GHOAK is the brainchild of CARLOS NASCIMENTO. And what a beautiful and bizarre child it is. Around a dozen pieces on this album, encompassing a wide variety of styles within a mainly electronic frame. These styles range from warm lounge rhythmic lulls through drum-machine-led dance pieces to the click, blip and hum end of the scale, then presses onwards to even more extreme points of Industrial Factory strangeness. At times it hits on that Eighties bright brash commercial sound - the JAN HAMMER / MIAMI VICE - cum - "Axel F" style that seemed to define that particular point in time. At other moments it becomes a kinda happy lightweight Industrial Beat, a complex cobweb-strewn construction of machine-logic percussion. At others it even sounds a little like the zany point of programming FAMLENDE FORSØK reached with the early AMIGA 500 experiments. I'm not sure whether the commercial side of this music is there to say 'see, I can play, so my experiments are purely choice' or whether his experiments are some kind of tokenism. In truth, I think this guy does what he bloody well likes Because He Can! It certainly seems, when his commercial aspirations take a back seat, that what seeps from the speakers is sincere and entertaining. He manages to entertain both when he's playing it safe and when he's pushing back the boundaries. Stuffed with clever ideas, most of which hit the LZ smack dead centre. Approach this album with few expectations, and it should reward you a thousandfold. Originally reviewed for Metamorphic Journeyman.
